Why Vietnam Matters for Furniture Manufacturing and Sourcing

Vietnam has become one of the world’s most important furniture manufacturing base. For international furniture brands, retailers, wholesalers and importers, the attraction is no longer simply lower-cost production. Vietnam offers a mature export furniture ecosystem, established woodworking capabilities, upholstery production, mixed-material manufacturing and decades of experience supplying demanding international markets.

Vietnam Is Already a Major Furniture Export Platform

Vietnam’s furniture industry operates at global scale. In 2025, the country exported more than US$17 billion of wood and wood products, with the United States accounting for roughly 55% of the sector’s export value. Wooden furniture remained the largest value-added product group. For a buyer, those numbers matter because they indicate an established manufacturing ecosystem rather than an emerging experimental base.

Why Furniture Buyers Consider Vietnam

Vietnam combines several characteristics that matter to furniture programs: a skilled woodworking and furniture labor base; established export-oriented factories; access to solid wood, engineered wood, metal, stone, upholstery and mixed-material processes; proximity to Asian material and component supply chains; and extensive experience with containerized export production.

The strongest reason to consider Vietnam, however, is not any single cost advantage. It is the ability to build repeatable programs around product development, prototyping, production control and export execution.

The Factory Is Only One Part of the Decision

A capable factory does not automatically create a successful sourcing program. Buyers still need to evaluate whether the manufacturing platform can translate a design into production drawings, develop finishes and prototypes, maintain specifications through production, control quality at the correct stages and package products appropriately for the destination market.

Vietnam Is Not the Right Answer for Every Product

Manufacturing decisions should be product-specific. Some products benefit from Vietnam’s furniture ecosystem more than others, and material availability, construction method, quantities, freight economics and destination-market duties all affect the final landed cost. Buyers should compare total program economics rather than choosing a country based on factory price alone.
