Building a Resilient Furniture Sourcing Strategy in Vietnam
A strong furniture sourcing strategy is not a list of factories. It is a system for deciding which products belong with which manufacturing platform, how specifications are controlled, how quality is verified and how successful products move into repeat production.
Start With the Product, Not the Supplier List
Before approaching factories, define the category, materials, target construction, quantities, destination market and commercial objective. This immediately narrows the type of manufacturing capability required and prevents buyers from comparing quotations from suppliers that are not genuinely equivalent.
Separate Development Capability From Production Capacity
A factory can have significant capacity and still be weak at developing a new product. Conversely, a strong prototype workshop may not be the best platform for repeat mass production. Furniture buyers should understand how technical development, prototyping and industrialized production connect.
Build Approved References
Technical drawings, finish samples, prototypes and packaging specifications turn subjective expectations into manufacturing references. They also reduce the amount of knowledge trapped in emails or individual employees, making repeat orders easier to manage.
Use More Than One Risk Lens
Supplier risk is not only financial or operational. Buyers should consider material origin, compliance, tariff exposure, critical components, capacity concentration and logistics. Current U.S. scrutiny of origin and trade remedies in wood and furniture categories makes documentation increasingly important.
Use Initial Orders to Learn
The first commercial order should generate information: which products run smoothly, which finishes are difficult, where packaging can improve and which models justify higher quantities. That evidence should shape the next order rather than forcing the entire assortment into the same volume assumptions.
Build Around Repeat Orders
The strategic advantage comes when development work compounds. Approved products, drawings and QC standards can support recurring production, while successful models move into better quantity economics. That is fundamentally different from restarting the sourcing process for every purchase.
